Learn to Meditate.

People first become interested in meditation for all kinds of reasons.  Sometimes it is a response to the level of stress and pressure in their lives.  Others are drawn to meditation because of the ethical or spiritual problems they feel they need to look closer at.

We are surrounded by so many distractions that it is not easy to get into the rhythm of meditating.  The main purpose of our group is to help anyone wanting to do this by providing a quiet place once a week where they can meditate with others.

Evenings also include classes and discussions and the chance to meet socially over a cup of tea.

For further questions please e-mail or you can always telephone Bob McGraw   01330 824339.

Are you part of a wider organisation?

Yes, we are one of the many mediation groups affiliated with Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey, a Soto Zen Monastery and retreat centre for men and women in Northumberland.  The Abbey has a small centre in Edinburgh, The Portobello Buddhist Priory.

Both the Abbey and the Priory are part of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives, an international Buddhist Organisation.  You will find  a list at the Links page.

What do you usually do at meetings?

The main purpose of our meeting is to sit and meditate together.  During the first half of the evening we sit for 25 minute periods, separated by five minutes of' 'walking meditation'.  Meditation begins with a short scripture recitation and incense offering.  All scriptures are recite in English, and it is fine to just sit and listen.  After meditation we have a social tea and class, talk or discussion on a topic of interest to the group.  This can often be questions people have about their meditation practice.

What should I expect on my first visit?

Plan to arrive by 6.25pm as we begin on time.  It is fine to just turn up but it can help us to know you are coming.  We will give you meditation instruction for about half an hour covering posture, mental activity and breathing, and then you will join the main group for the second meditation period followed by the class and the tea.  We finish around 8.30pm.

What will it cost?

There us never a fixed charge for any activity associated with Throssel Hole Abbey - people donate whatever they can afford.  Our weekly room hire costs about £20 and most members contribute to the 'begging bowl' to help cover this, but there is no obligation.

Who organises the group?

Most of the organisation of events are shared among regular members but you initial contact will be made with one of our lay ministers.
